  2. This summary was very interesting and enjoyable to read, especially since I had recently read a summary of another book called Saint Peter: A Biography, by Michael Grant. Grant calls into question Peter’s prominence and importance in early Christianity. I think I agree with Hengel that a lot more is made out of Peter and Paul’s disagreements than is really merited.

    The reference to D&C 64 is intriguing. Who knows what light and details may be shed on New Testament times some day, through continuing revelation or further textual discoveries. We know so little, and we have only scraps in the New Testament. Imagine, for example, if someone were to try reconstructing 20th century Mormon beliefs from a total of only 27 general or stake conference talks, 13 or 14 of which all came from the same general authority. It would inevitably be a very incomplete picture. It’s good to be reminded that all scholarly conclusions are tentative and provisional.
